-- Bodega Valsacro Rioja Dioro 2005
The 2005 Dioro is composed of 40% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, and, surprise, surprise, 10% Macabeo, a white grape. Valsacro’s rendition of Cote-Rotie works great. Purple in color, the wine is fragrant with notes of spice box, flowers, blueberry, and assorted black fruits. Smooth-textured, ripe, and lengthy, this is a hedonistic effort to drink over the next 6-8 years.
Background: In 2002, just before harvest, we visited the Escudero family who has been making wines for generations in the rugged, semi-desert foothills in the southwestern corner of the Rioja Baja region. As proud grape growers they took us to view some of the oldest vineyards on their property. Rows of big gnarly vine Grenache, Mazuelo, & Tempranillo ripened before our eyes. And we eagerly anticipated the tasting that was to come. At that time, "Dioro" was just a fledgling project.
The earlier Valsacros were made from a field selection of the older vineyards. The "Dioro" requires a four-stage selection process that includes an initial field selection of the fruit followed by a second table selection as the grapes come into the winery. After fermentation wine from selected tanks is transferred to new French oak barrels for 12-14 months of barrel age. Finally, the best barrels are set aside for Dioro and the remainder used to "upgrade" the normal Valsacro
